Q: What is a .csv file?

A:  This stands for comma separated variable, it a standard database format for transferring data from one program to another. Excel will read across each row, and where one the contents of one cell ends, it places a comma which differentiates it from the contents of cell to its immediate right (the next column over on the same row).

Try opening a .csv file in Excel. Instead of seeing info in columns, all the data will be crammed into the same column (probably col A) with lots of commas instead. Its a bit painful to look at for people, but computers love it.

Tip: if you then need to modify your csv file you can have Excel make all the data jump back into columns by:
highlighting the data you wish to have formatted
then go to data > text to columns
in the box that opens: check delimited > next > check comma as your delimiter > finish
presto!
